Welcome to another edition of our Weekly Rewind – where we summarize all our posts from the last week. The top stories this week were 3) “Internet Infrastructure in 5 Minutes”, 2) “6 Tips for Learning Information Security”, and 1) “Cybersecurity versus Information Security”. If you missed anything or happened to be offline, we hope you find this summary post useful as a quick reference.

A la Schneier … you can also use this rewind post to talk about the security stories in the news that we haven’t covered remote-access.

60% Off Hacker Academy Yearly Subscription: I’ve been tinkering on and off with some different training options lately and one great resource I’ve come across is The Hacker Academy. For $1499 a year you basically get on-demand access to all their security training, including hands-on labs for each lesson in the form of a downloadable VM or through a web browser and their on-demand cloud lab environment (personally I recommend just using the downloadable VM option). And for those concerned with gaining CPEs, after the completion of each course the Hacker Academy provides certificates you can submit to your cert organization of choice. (continued here)

QOTD – If Opportunity Doesn’t Knock, Build a Door…: “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” – Milton BerleThis is a wonderful quote that inspired M. Orinoco to take his DFIR career in a new direction. Basically, he was no longer challenged in his current job but was a little intimated to evolve his work into new areas. In this case the new area was doing DFIR on UNIX systems. (continued here)

Cyber Security versus Information Security: You may have seen our post on the difference between information security and information assurance. But how does cyber security fit into all this? Well, according to this recent article on JDSupra some see cyber as being broader than plain old information security. From their perspective the key difference is that information security is mainly relevant to personal information while cyber security is more universal, focusing on other concerns such as our national infrastructure. What do you think the difference between information security and cyber security is? Let us know in the comments below. (continued here)

Internet Infrastructure in 5 Minutes: Next networking class I teach is going to start with this video… Hopefully after these 5 minutes everyone will get the gist and we can just move on to some of the more fun stuff. :) The only thing I could have wished for was more puppy pictures. Know of any other fun videos we can post? Let us know in the comments below. (continued here)

6 Tips for Learning Information Security: Some good tips on learning information security (note – not cyber security;) ) to consider in this recent article on Help Net Security… Here’s the TL;DR quick version. (continued here)

US Gov Serving Warrants for Email on Irish Server: Fascinating how we (the US government) are trying to serve warrants for data that is held on servers located in another country. Looks like the judges are redefining the term warrant, saying that warrants for online data are different from traditional warrants. Of course the company being served in this case, Microsoft, is going to fight the ruling. This case will be interesting to follow…(continued here)

QOTD – PCAP Or It Didn’t Happen…: “PCAP or it didn’t happen” – Unknown. Not really sure who originally said this great statement but just had to point it out… I can’t believe I hadn’t heard this quote before. Thanks to Netresec.com for mentioning it in their blog post discussing the whole OpenSSL heartbleed thing. (continued here)

I don’t know why we continue to spilt hairs in the cyber security vs information security debate. In the end it boils down to confidentiality, integrity, and availability which is the three principle that makes up information security. In each definition our common goal is to protecting information.
