I just love to use quotes like this when mentoring those new to infosec. It gets back to advice that I hear time and time again … that the best way to learn this field is to just setup your own lab and play with/hack it. In those cases you usually don’t have big vendor software to work with. Instead you start with open source software and work out from there. This learning style teaches not only that free tool but also the basics of the technology on top of which it is built. When you understand the basics, learning vendor tools is moot. It’s just a different interface built on top of the same foundation.
